iPad Limitations
Charger Limitations & Info
The iPad requires a 10W, 2.1A charger to charge the battery. It takes approx. 5 hours to fully recharge a depleted battery. Depart with a fully charged battery and don't count on a charging port being available in your aircraft.
Overheating
Do not leave the iPad in direct sunlight. It will quickly overhead and stop working until it cools back to the normal operating range of 32° to 95° F. Keep fresh air vents pointed at the iPad during high temp operations to help keep it cool.
Maximum Altitude
The max operational altitude for the iPad is 10,000 feet (Apple technical specs).
GPS Interference
Though unlikely, 3G and 4G capability on the iPad can interfere with a panel mount GPS and avionics systems. Garmin has reported intermittent loss of flight data on some G1000 systems due to 4G signal interference, as discussed in the G1000 System Maintenance Manual. Disable all wireless capability that is not in use to maximize battery life and minimize risk of interference with aircraft navigation equipment.
If you experience loss of flight data:
- Fly the Plane!
- Disable cell and other wireless signals (read Preserve Your Battery for tips regarding turning off your wireless signals).
- Have paper charts readily available as a backup.
- Refer to your checklist.
